The Nintendo 3DS is a handheld video game system produced by Nintendo, and the first overall video game system to support glasses-free 3D. It was released in North America in March 2011. It is the successor to the Nintendo DS line of handhelds.
History[]
Upon release, the system only came in Cosmo Black and Aqua Blue. Later Flame Red, Pearl Pink, and Royal Purple were available on all regions, with Cobalt Blue and white available only in Japan.

Nintendo 3DS XL[]
A year after the release of the 3DS, Nintendo announced the 3DS XL just shortly after E3. Just like the DSi XL was to the DSi, this is a supersized version of the 3DS. It released in Europe in the three colorsāblue, red, and silver. The U.S. had blue and red, and in Japan, it was released with the colors of blue, red, and white. Only the front and the back of the system is colored, though; the insides are all black, except for the white version, which is completely white.
Nintendo 2DS[]
An iteration of the 3DS that does not fold and lacks the stereoscopic 3D functionality of the original was released in North America, Europe, and Australia on October 12, 2013.
New Nintendo 3DS[]
An enhanced version of the system, with added processing power and additional buttons (including an added C-stick) and amiibo functionality was released in Japan in late 2014 and in North America and Europe in 2015.
Kid Icarus[]
The entire Kid Icarus franchise is available to play on the system. Kid Icarus: Uprising is the only original Kid Icarus game to be produced for the 3DS, releasing on March 22nd, 2012, and was later released digitally on the Nintendo eShop on November 8th, 2013.[1] The game makes use of the system's AR Card feature, with its own line of cards. An enhanced port of the original Kid Icarus, titled 3D Classics: Kid Icarus, was given away as a download code to users who registered two eligible 3DS games between November 1, 2011 and January 31, 2012 through Club Nintendo, as well as a pre-order bonus for Uprising from select retailers.[2][3] It was later released separately in 2012.[4] The Game Boy title Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters was released on the Nintendo eShop worldwide in 2012, releasing in Japan for the first time.[5]
A free downloadable video montage of four Uprising gameplay trailers was released on September 27th, 2012.[6] All three of the Kid Icarus 3D Anime shorts were available to stream on the system's Nintendo Video service in stereoscopic 3D, premiering one week before Uprising's launch in every region. They were later distributed as downloadable video applications on the Nintendo eShop in 2017, exclusively as My Nintendo rewards, to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Uprising's release, with each application costing 100 Platinum Coins in North America and Europe,[7][8] and 80 Platinum Coins in Japan.[9]
Pit, Palutena, and Dark Pit appear as playable fighters in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, with the Reset Bomb Forest appearing as a stage exclusively for the 3DS version. Ultimate NES Remix includes several playable challenges that remix the original Kid Icarus. Pit is playable in WarioWare Gold, in one of 5-Volt's microgames, also titled Kid Icarus. The microgame features a scenario taking place during the final boss battle of the original Kid Icarus, with Pit flying up and down at a set speed, forcing the player to time their button presses to shoot Medusa's eye. A 3DS home screen theme based on the original Kid Icarus was released in 2015 on the Theme Shop and as a My Nintendo reward, available for 200 Platinum Coins.[10][11] Badges based on the original Kid Icarus were available in Nintendo Badge Arcade in 2016 and can be displayed on the 3DS home screen when earned in-game.[12]
