Appearances

Syrens are Underworld enemies that debuted in the original Kid Icarus.

Physical Appearance[]

In the original Kid Icarus, Syrens are blue-skinned, humanoid creatures with talons for feet and wings for arms. They have fangs protruding from their mouths, long, purple hair, and a short tail.

In Uprising, their purple hair is now fashioned into buns on either side of their head, and they have red eyes, a long tail feather, a brown skirt, and a breastplate to match.

Appearances[]

Kid Icarus[]

The wicked creature of legend. If Pit is caught unaware by her beautiful female form she'll attack Pit with the steely claws on her feet.

— Her Game Manual Description

Syrens are found in the Palace in the Sky, where they fly in from the right side of the screen in groups of 2-4 in a wave-like attack pattern.

Kid Icarus: Uprising[]

Syrens behave differently from how they previously did, now flying a safe distance away from Pit before shooting at him with whirlwind projectiles. If these whirlwinds connect with Pit in a Land Battle, they will send him flying upwards.

In Air Battles, Syrens commonly carry other Underworld troops on their backs.

Idol Description[]

Syren[]

Long thought the stuff of myths, Syrens are creatures that seem to combine the bodies of women with the limbs of birds. Their ability to fly and shoot whirlwinds from their open mouths sets them apart from all monsters and most gamers.

Censorship[]

Betasyren

The Syren without her breastplate.

Early promotional artwork shows that Syrens lacked the breastplate they now don in the finalized version of Uprising, making them appear more similarly to how they did in the original Kid Icarus.

The beta version of her AR Card, as well as early demo footage, also displayed this difference, suggesting this change was made late in development. Her design was likely changed before Uprising's release to avoid issues involving the use of female nudity in games intended for younger audiences.

Trivia[]

  • The Syren is based on the more bird-like depictions of Sirens from Greek mythology.
  • A Syren appeared in a comic book version of Captain N: The Game Master, which often featured Eggplant Wizard. In the issue, many of Kid Icarus's enemies have been captured and sent to a prison. Among them was a Syren, who in this case had no nudity, being dressed in a prison uniform. Also, the Syren was not an enemy, having been reformed from being jailed.
